The world's most famous monument. Commissioned by Emperor Vespasian and completed by his son Titus in 80 AD, the building was intended for gladiatorial combats and games. Known as the Colosseum because of the colossal bronze statue of Nero that was placed near the monument in the 2nd century AD, its actual name is the Flavian Amphitheater. Throughout the Empire, the Colosseum underwent repeated restorations due to fires and earthquakes. Present in the city for over 2,000 years, it stands nearly 50 meters tall and could accommodate up to 70,000 people.
